How to make ginger tea - Step by step instructions. 15th December, is International tea day. It is winter time, a perfect day to make ginger tea.
And it is so easy to make ginger tea.
Ginger root, spice / herb has many health benefits. Ginger root tea is a
perfect way to get these benefits by having ginger tea.
It is easy to make tea with ginger as only 2 ingredients are needed and it takes just about 5-10 minutes. You need only water and fresh ginger root or dry ginger powder to make ginger tea.
Fresh ginger root is best for making ginger but in the absence of that, you may use dry ginger powder.
You may drink hot ginger root tea for digestion or to alleviate cold or cough or fever.

How to make Fresh Ginger root tea?
Ingredients for making 2 cups of ginger root tea
- Water - 2 1/4 cups
- Fresh ginger root - 1 cm or more according to taste.
Optional ingredients
- Lime juice - 1 tsp
- Sweetener 1 tsp - honey, sugar or jaggery according to taste
- Tea powder/leaves - 1 tsp
Making ginger tea
- Wash the ginger root well to remove any dirt. There is no need to remove ginger skin but you may remove it if you wish. Cut ginger root in thin slices or small pieces or thin strips.
- You may also grate ginger with a small hole
grater.
- I
prefer to crush the ginger piece using mortar and pestle. I feel that
gives faster results.
- Put this chopped/sliced/crushed or grated ginger in the water and
bring to boil.
- Simmer for about 5 to 10
minutes. The simmering time depends on how strong you want the ginger
flavor to be. Simmer longer or add more ginger to get a stronger flavor.
- Be around when the water starts boiling with ginger. The aroma is wonderful so do not miss it by going out of the kitchen.
- After the water has boiled with ginger for a few minutes, it will have a pale yellow-brown color. Just sniff it. Lovely!
- Now, if you like to chew ginger along with drinking tea, no need to
strain it. If you don't want to chew ginger, strain it.
- Add honey if you
like it sweetish. Sugar or jaggery may be added instead of honey.
Drink hot and experience the feeling of freshness and rejuvenation.
You may add a little milk to your ginger tea if you wish. When you are adding milk, use a bit more ginger powder or boil longer. Milk makes the tea milder.
In case fresh ginger root is not available, you may use dry ginger powder. The flavor slightly differs from the ginger root tea, but it is still quite good.
How to make ginger tea using dry ginger powder?
Ingredients to make 2 cups of ginger tea with dry ginger powder
- Water 2 1/4 cup
- Dry ginger powder 1/2 tsp
Optional ingredients
- Lime juice - 1 tsp
- Sweetener 1 tsp - honey, sugar or jaggery according to taste
- Tea powder/leaves - 1 tsp
Method to make ginger tea with dry ginger powder
- Heat water till it starts boiling.
- Add dry ginger powder and simmer for
3-4 minutes. The ginger tea will be ready.
- No need to strain it.
- Add
sugar or honey according to taste and drink hot.
Tips :
Lemon juice is optional. You may add a little milk instead of lemon juice if you wish. When you are adding milk, use a bit more ginger powder or boil longer. Milk makes the tea milder.
