These seeds are black and have similar shape as long grained rice. These seeds have a long shelf life.
How to make Karale-Khursani chutney powder
Ingredients for karale chutney
- 1 cup Niger seeds / Uchellu / Gurellu / Karale(कारळे)
- 1/4 cup Peanut /Ground nut
- 2 tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp grated dry coconut(may use desiccated coconut)
- 8 - 15 dry red chilis or chili powder, mix both ( guntur + byadgi variety) spicy + red color giving variet. I am using chili powder.
- a handful Curry Leaves
- to taste Salt
Optional Ingredients:
- lime size Tamarind or 1 or 2 pieces of dry kokum. I am using kokum.
- jaggery to balance sourness of tamarind
- 5 - 10 flakes Garlic, peeled
Step by step instructions for making keyword
- Take karle seeds in a pan and dry roast for 4-5 minutes on low flame.
- When roasted well, the seeds give nice aroma.
- Take out on a plate after roasting. Let cool.
- Now roast peanuts for 4-5 minutes. Take out on a plate.
- Roast til/sesame seeds.
Take out on a plate.
- Roast grated dry kopra.
Take out on a plate.
- When all the roasted ingredients are cooled to room temperature, add chili powder, salt.
- Add jaggery and 1 piece of kokum(amsul). This adds taste and kokum is good for digestion and reducing acidity.

- You may add roasted gram instead of or along with peanuts.
- Add dry curry leaves.
